The Scientific Instrument Makers 1997 Achievement Award is made to Arun
Technology Ltd. for their highly successful technical development and market
penetration of their range of spectrometers culminating in the Metalscan
2000 Desktop Metals Analyser. By utilising a flat field holographic grating
spectrometer and a charge coupled device linear detector array coupled to an
argon flushed uni-polar spark source, this instrument offers measurement
accuracy comparable to other laboratory metals spectrometers. By purging the
optical system with argon, the wavelength range has been extended down to
170nm, vital for the measurement of key elements in steels and cast iron
material. The Metalscan 2000 produces results as accurate as "laboratory
standard" equipment but at significantly lower cost.
